Now that summer is here, it’s time to fire up the grill, enjoy a cold beverage and eat some great food. Most importantly, we can do this in a sustainable way and reduce our impact on the environment.
Reduce the amount of waste created when having friends and family over in numerous ways. Avoid using paper or plastic cups, plates and silverware. Instead use your everyday dishes, glassware, silverware and cloth napkins. It may take an extra load in the dishwasher, but you’ll avoid putting these paper and plastic items into the landfill and it will save you money too.
Buy local. From the produce, meat and cheese you use to the beer, wine and other spirits, there is always a local option that reduces the carbon footprint and helps our local economy. Try to buy all of your BBQ and picnic items from suppliers close to home. Our community has so many incredible resources and now is a perfect time to show them your support.
When having friends and family over for a cookout or party, make recycling easy and the ‘cool’ thing to do. Put out separate bins for aluminum cans, glass, plastics and all other items that can be recycled and clearly label them for all to see and use. If these are out in the open, it will encourage people to recycle and not go looking for the garbage. Let’s all have a fun and sustainable summer and do our part to reduce our waste in any way we can.
