Urban Heat Island Effect

A lesson plan by Garth Chalmers and Sandra McEwan

Urban Heat Island Effect is an excellent way to evaluate the impact of human activity on natural systems. Areas near your school are an excellent place to measure and identify factors involved with creating the heat island effect. Students will enjoy this outdoor inquiry into the physical processes that create climate and some of the causes of climate change. Different classes can analyze different micro-ecosystems and all of the data can be mapped and compared or, the school and parking lots can be analyzed and the data can be used to make global connections with regards to climate change. The importance of stewardship and sustainability becomes clear in discussion or extension activities that are provided.
