Newspaper and mixed paper is collected in the bin beside the cardboard compactor at our main collection center and at all of our remote collection locations. You will have a hard time finding paper that can't go into these bins because they can take it all! Just remember, no plastic, no string, no metal and read on below.
What goes in?
newspaper
magazines
brochures
envelopes
phone books
paper bags
glossy paper
packing paper
post-it notes
soft cover books
hard cover books with covers torn off .The cardboard cover can go with cardboard
construction paper
wrapping paper
carbon paper
ream wrappers
white paper
receipts
neon/bright paper
art paper
What does not go in?
cardboard of any kind - This includes all paperboard. If it's stiff enough to stand up on its end, it's probably cardboard.
plastic bags - This includes those plastic bags wrapping magazines that you get in the mail.
string - Cut it off and reuse it or throw it away.
pet food bags. These bags have a plastic liner which can not be recycled.
bubble wrap mailers. Even though these come in the mail, they are a combination of plastic and paper and can not be recycled.
spiral bindings, both plastic and metal and plastic presentation covers
laminated paper
rubber bands, foil or plastic candy wrappers - Discourage others from using recycling bins as a garbage can.
used tissues and paper towels - Yuck! (We have our hands in this bin all the time.)
food residue, dirt, sticks, leaves, bricks, styrofoam peanuts, bubble wrap, diapers, old pens, toy cars, lost socks etc. (no laughing, this list is based on experience) Just paper. Like all recyclables, newspaper needs to be relatively clean to be recyclable.
What not to worry about?
Small bits of metal and tape holding paper together are okay. This includes staples, paper clips and the occasional binder clip. Of course, if you have a bunch of binder clips you should try to pull them off and reuse them.
Most people who collect at home have only a small amount of white paper. It's perfectly okay to put this into the newspaper bin and reduce the number of bins and amount of sorting you have to do at home.
What else do you need to know?
If the bin at our main collection center is overflowing (we can't always get change-outs exactly when we want them) consider going to one of our other locations with your newspaper. These bins often have more room.
Where does it go?
Our mixed paper (newspaper, phone books, paperback and hard-cover books, paper grocery bags, magazines, junk mail, catalogues, wrapping paper, etc.) bins are located throughout the country. The content of all the bins is hauled to a recycler in Salt Lake City where it is shredded multiple times and made into home insulation and tissue.
