Bottle Bill   People in Utah are working on passing a container deposit law for the state.  This link will take you to a page with links to the bills and senators and representatives who are involved.  Bottle bills are already at work increasing recycling in 11 other states.

Recycling Market Development Zones   Tax credits are available to help support recycling efforts in Utah.  If your area is not in an existing zone, you may be able to have a new zone created.

www.eastcanyoncreek.org The East Canyon Creek watershed is located in Morgan and Summit counties of Utah's Wasatch range. The exploding population of Park City and the Snyderville Basin has strained the watershed resource and its downstream evironment.

Precycling

Precycling simply means thinking about the impact of what you buy before you buy it.  It's easy and has a huge impact.  As soon as you buy something, they'll make another one.  Choose wisely.  Check out these sites to learn more:

Attitudes toward precycling A great site prepared by the grade nine class of Snow Lake (Manitoba, I think).  They did a study of waste and recycling in their town.

http://www.ecocycle.org/   Eco-Cycle is one of the largest non-profit recyclers in the USA and was created 26 years ago by everyday residents who had a passionate belief in conserving natural resources.  Eco-Cycle started in Boulder, Colorado in 1976 making it one of the first 20 communities in the U.S. to offer curbside recycling.

Electronics Recycling

http://www.dellcom/recycle   Now you can recycle your old computers, monitors, printers and scanners no matter where you live!  For $7.50 per component ($15.00 for a computer and monitor) they will pick it up from your doorstep and get it recycled.  You do not have to be buying a new Dell.  They also have a donation program for good working equipment.  You need to pack the computer yourself, so drop by Recycle Utah and pick up the boxes and packing material you'll need.

Recycle small electronics & inkjet cartridges by mailing them for free!

http://www.eiae.org   "The Consumer Education Initiative (CEI) is a program developed by the Environmental Issues Council of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA). Its purpose is to inform consumers about recycling and reuse opportunities for used electronics."

CD's, DVD's and Diskettes

http://www.greendisk.com/default.html   This company can recycle your old electronic media and manufactures new ones using the recycled materials.  Look for their products when you shop, too.  (There are two or three other companies that will recycle CD's, but none online.  Search for 'CD Recycling' if you don't like Greendisk.)

What about disposable DVD's?   

We, along with just about everyone else involved in waste reduction and recycling, are a little baffled by Disney Corporation's decision to start producing disposable DVD's!

http://www.amazingrecycled.com/    A company from Colorado who's mission is to provide alternative products made from recycled materials.  Lots of neat products and a great place to inspire ideas of your own.

Recycled Plastic Products Directory   The American Plastics Council and the Environment and Plastics Industry Council of Canada present the U.S. and Canadian Recycled Plastic Products Directory to assist private and public sector buyers in locating products made with or packaged in recycled plastic.  There are more than 1300 products in this list!   Buy recycled, close the loop.

Composting

Compost Guide   A comprehensive resource about making compost including instructions on how to compost, which materials to use, and how to deal with common composting problems.  The site has a very complete links page and includes a forum with discussions about composting.

Utah State University Extension yard and garden publications . Utah specific compost and mulch publications.

http://www.composters.com   This is a commercial site trying to get you to buy composters but they have so many composters I just had to include them.

http://www.wormdigest.org   This is the place to learn everything you ever dreamed you'd want to know about worms.  They have all the information you could need to set up vermicomposting in your home.  If you live in a small house or apartment and don't have a lot of room, this is the way to keep your kitchen waste out of the landfill and put it to use.

Mulch

Guide to Selecting a Garden Mulch   A guide to many different types of mulch on GardenGuides.com.  This page also has a method for calculating the amount of mulch you will require.

Using Mulches in Utah Landscapes and Gardens Another general information source on mulch (pdf format) from the Utah State University Extension.

http://www. rubberificmulch.com/   An interesting mulch option made in St. Louis Missouri from recycled truck tires.  The company claims that it lasts 10 years before needing replacement, won't wash away because it's 5 times heavier than wood and does not attract insects.  Rubberific mulch is available at Sutherland Lumber in Salt Lake City.

Water Information

http://www.worldwatermonitoringday.org   America's Clean Water Foundation and the International Water Association are inviting citizens and organizations from around the globe to share in the experience of water quality monitoring on World Water Monitoring Day 2003.  From September 18 to October 18, citizens throughout the world community will have an opportunity to monitor the quality of their local watersheds and enter the results of their efforts into an international database.

http://www.eastcanyoncreek.org/ The East Canyon Watershed Committee is a coalition of public and private concerns that have a vested interest in restoring the East Canyon Creek watershed to a healthy state.  This is your back yard!
