Holiday Feast Planning

The holiday season is here and it’s time to start planning and thinking sustainability! With time off from work and school, spending time with family and friends, these last weeks of the year are full of entertaining and get togethers.

This time of year can also be filled with unnecessary waste from parties and get togethers. The EPA estimates that between Thanksgiving Day and New Year’s Day, the volume of household waste by 25%. This is a different side to the holidays we often don’t think about.

In addition to all that you’re already doing to decrease your environmental footprint, beyond the usual recycling and composting, here are some ways to cut back on waste this season, and keep your holidays a little more green.

If you’re hosting a holiday party, consider using reusable dishes instead of paper plates, plastic cups and cutlery. A full dishwasher is more efficient than throwing away these items and sending them to the landfill. Also think about minimizing any food waste during your soiree. As you’re cooking or ordering your Thanksgiving or other holiday meals this year, be sure to order a manageable amount for you and your guests to enjoy without any going to waste.

Recycle Utah wishes you a safe and wonderful holiday season and we hope you are able to celebrate in a sustainable fashion with your friends and family.
