Harvesting Trees as a Crop

A lesson plan by Abraham Funchess from KATE - Kids about the Environment

Harvesting Trees as a Crop shows students the precise measurements and calculations needed to manage an economic commodity, trees in this case. It applies math and science to their daily lives and exemplifies the resources that each and every one of us uses. Middle School students will take home a profound message from a simple activity! This is an excellent interdisciplinary activity. Students will learn how foresters manage and maintain forests as a renewable resource. They will collect and interpret data, estimate and calculate. Extension activities are countless -- sustainability, renewable resources, and carbon footprint to name a few.
